Abstract:
These are images of U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps that we received in 1998. The files have not been updated since that time, and many of the maps are more than 50 years old.

The quadrangles were scanned by the USGS Digital Raster Graphics (DRG) Program. A DRG is a scanned image of a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) standard series topographic map, including all map collar information. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth. The map is scanned at a minimum resolution of 250 dots per inch. The original images were TIFF images in UTM coordinates that used a 12-color pallette.

There are three collections of maps and each collection is available in multiple formats. One collection consists of 1:24,000 scale maps of 3776 7.5-minute quadrangles. The second collection consists of 1:100,000 scale maps of 118 60x30-minute quadrangles, and the third collection consists of 1:250,000 scale maps of 31 2x1 degree quadrangles.

The original DRG images of each quadrangle from USGS are available for each collection. These are images of the entire map sheet, including the map margins containing map titles, scalebars, and publication information. The images are registered to the UTM coordinate system, NAD 27.

The State Library clipped the marginal information from each image and converted them to the Montana State Plane coordinate system, and this is the second format that each collection is available in. To facilitate easier distribution and use of the data, the library also compressed the images to MrSID format and mosaicked them so that each file covers a larger area. There are 111 1:24,000 scale images to cover the entire state and single mosaics covering the entire state for the 1:100,000 and 1:250,000 scale maps.
